In "The Old Fortress Commandant", l'autore ha trovato importante rivelare un evento apparentemente inosservabile; in un paesaggio romantico da una vecchia fortezza, il comandante è seduto con il suo cane, fumando un tubo e ricordando i vecchi tempi. La sottigliezza psicologica, la misteriosità e l'umore enfasi di questo dipinto è caratteristica di altre opere di Spitzweg. L'autore è impegnato in una riflessione su come la solitudine organizzata, compiuta e pacifica può essere, al contrario della tragedia e della solitudine che a volte può nascondersi in una vita sociale attiva.
