Susan Macdowell, ex studente di Thomas Eakins presso l'Accademia delle Belle Arti della Pennsylvania, lo sposò nel 1884. Primariamente una ritrattista, ha spesso rappresentato i membri della famiglia in ambienti interni. Il suo modello qui potrebbe essere sua sorella Elizabeth, il cui futuro marito sarebbe apparso come "Il Pensatore" nel 1900 (17.172). Il ventilatore che poggia sul tavolo riflette l'interesse di Susan Eakins nell'arte giapponese, che è anche segnalato dal libro di stampe che tiene nel ritratto di suo marito (23.139). Dopo il suo matrimonio, Susan Eakins ha rinunciato a dipingere per dedicarsi ad assistere il marito e, più tardi, a stabilire la sua reputazione.
