Il Giappone fu chiuso al commercio con l'Occidente fino al 1854, e non fu fino alla seconda metà del XIX secolo che la decorazione giapponese divenne una potente influenza sul design europeo e americano. I vasi furono probabilmente acquisiti dai Frick nel 1880. Sono ornamentati con passeri volanti e foglie di acero giapponesi cadenti sulla parte anteriore e ragnatele e insetti sul retro.
