Questo dipinto raffigura san Erasmo, vescovo di Formia (Italia), noto anche come sant'Elmo, che visse nel III secolo e morì come martire durante il dominio dell'imperatore Diocleziano. Il culto di questo santo è stato diffuso nella Chiesa cattolica fin dall'antichità. A partire dal Medioevo, San Erasmo è stato considerato uno dei quattordici santi che aiuta i credenti in tempi di pericoli e conflitti. Il santo è raffigurato tipicamente, indossando abiti vescovili liturgici e tenendo lo strumento usato per torturarlo - un vento con le sue interiora avvolto intorno a esso. Questi dettagli sono tipici dell'iconografia di Sant'Erasmo (Testo autore dr. Rūta Janonienė).
