La leggenda illustrata di Ishiyamadera raffigura trentatré storie separate circa i poteri miracolosi dell'icona principale del tempio, il Kannon di Nyoirin, popolare soprattutto tra i pellegrini femminili per il suo gioiello e la capacità di aiutare nel concepimento e nel parto sicuro. Autore e autoprofesso Genji fanatico Takasue no Musume fece il viaggio lì nel 1045, che è raffigurato qui, e lo registrò nel suo memoriale, Il diario di Sarashina (ca. 1060).
