Grazie alla somiglianza delle parole, la combinazione visiva di quercia (bai in cinese e haku in giapponese) e cervo (lu in cinese e roku in giapponese) ha trasmesso i desideri per un alto stipendio (letteralmente, 'onecento'). Il tema era stato divulgato in Giappone da Shen Nanping, pittore cinese che visse e insegnò a Nagasaki durante il 1730.
