Katei sviluppò amicizia con alcuni degli uomini cinesi che prestarono servizio all'ambasciata di Tokyo. Nel 1879, Shen Meishi conferì il nome poetico di ‘Red Plum Embankment Hall’ sulla nuova residenza di Katei. Nell'arte asiatica orientale, il fiore di prugne significa la fine dell'inverno e la venuta della primavera.
