Rousseau intraprese frequenti spedizioni di schizzo nelle province francesi. Nel 1844, insieme a Jules Dupré (1811-1889), visitò la regione di Landes nel sud-ovest, dove realizzò opere distintive per la loro osservazione penetrante e l'attenta esecuzione. Questa tela potrebbe essere stata dipinta più tardi nel 1840 o nel 1850. In quest'ultimo decennio Rousseau eccelleva nell'organizzazione di piani distanti in strisce parallele, un dispositivo compositivo che chiamava "planimetrico".
