Nel 1844, Rousseau visitò la regione Landes della Francia sudoccidentale, il cui terreno pianeggiante potrebbe aver ispirato la campagna raffigurata qui. Il paesaggio richiama le pianure aperte e i cieli ampi che aveva a lungo ammirato nella pittura paesaggistica olandese del XVII secolo. Il barcaiolo e il sentiero che porta indietro alla fattoria tra gli alberi indicano che questo è un luogo rustico, se non abbastanza selvaggio.
