Nel 1830, il diciottenne Rousseau partì per una spedizione di schizzi nella robusta regione Auvergne della Francia centrale che cambierebbe il corso della pittura paesaggistica. Dall'alto perch, l'artista ha dipinto questa vista panoramica di un villaggio non identificato immerso alla base di una ripida scogliera tra colline gonfie. Al suo ritorno a Parigi, schizzi come questo sono stati celebrati da figure di spicco della generazione romantica, che ha stabilito la reputazione di Rousseau. La campagna francese ha preso il suo posto come pari dell’Italia, con la franchezza del tatto visto qui diventare l’idioma vernacolare per rappresentarlo in vernice.
