Il MADELEINE, di proprietà del Commodore John S. Dickerson del Brooklyn Yacht Club e progettato da Jacob Voorhis, ha avuto una storia illustre. Fu costruita nel 1868 da David Kirby a Rye, New York come sloop di bordo. Nel 1870 MADELEINE fu parzialmente ricostruita e convertita in uno schooner, diventando poi membro della flotta del New York Yacht Club nel 1876. Quell'anno ha difeso la Coppa America contro il sfidante canadese COUNTESS OF DUFFERIN. Swiftest nella flotta dello Yacht Club di New York, MADELEINE ha vinto facilmente la Coppa.
