Il Corso di Impero è una serie di dipinti in cinque parti creati da Thomas Cole negli anni 1833-36. È notevole in parte per riflettere i sentimenti popolari americani dei tempi, quando molti videro il pastoralismo come la fase ideale della civiltà umana, temendo che l'impero avrebbe portato alla gluttonia e all'inevitabile decadimento. Il primo dipinto, The Savage State, mostra la valle dalla riva di fronte alla falesia, alla luce di un giorno tempestoso all'alba. Un cacciatore di pelli si affrettò attraverso il deserto, perseguendo un cervo; canoe paddle up il fiume; sulla riva lontana si può vedere una radura con un gruppo di wigwam intorno a un fuoco, il nucleo della città che deve essere. I riferimenti visivi sono quelli della vita nativa americana.
