Mostrato dal petto in su, un uomo barbuto con pelle pallida e guance arrossate indossa una giacca marrone castagno con un colletto denso, pizzo-trigato, pieghettato, crema-bianco in questo dipinto ritratto ottagonale. Il corpo dell'uomo è angolato alla nostra destra, e taglia i suoi occhi marroni leggeri per guardarci. Le rughe avvolgono gli angoli dei suoi occhi sotto le sopracciglia scure, e ha un naso dritto, stretto e zigomi alti. Le sue labbra rosse sono chiuse e quasi perse nell'ombra della sua barba piena e rifinita. I suoi capelli castani scuri sono pettinati indietro da una pettinatura recedente e cade intorno alle sue orecchie. Il colletto denso e arruffato arriva fino al lobo uditivo che possiamo vedere. Il suo gilet marrone ha una fila di bottoni d'oro sul davanti, e ci sono più bottoni d'oro lungo la manica. È illuminato dalla nostra sinistra fino a che il lato lontano del suo volto è in ombra. Lo sfondo marrone scuro si illumina leggermente intorno al viso.
