Questo ritratto di lunga durata raffigura la settantaseienne madre dell'artista-amico di Eakins Robert Arthur. Come rappresentazione di un modello anziano assorbito in un vecchio compito, il lavoro ricorda The Writing Master di Eakins, un ritratto di suo padre, appeso nelle vicinanze. Qui, come nella pittura precedente, l'artista ha usato forti contrasti di luce e scuro per definire forme e mettere in evidenza le mani e il volto, suggerendo sia la destrezza manuale che la saggezza dell'età. La sua tavolozza austero e l'eloquenza tranquilla rivelano anche lo studio di Eakins delle opere dei maestri del XVII secolo Rembrandt, Ribera e Velázquez.
