Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) è stato un eminente avvocato inglese, membro del Parlamento, e drammaturgo. Faceva parte di un circolo notevole di scrittori e artisti, tra cui Gainsborough, Reynolds e John Constable, che si incontrarono nella casa di Sir George Beaumont (il cui ritratto di Reynolds è anche nella collezione). Anche se Gainsborough rende il volto di Sheridan con piccoli e attenti colpi, i suoi capelli e vestiti mostrano la tecnica schizzo preferita di Gainsborough e la spazzola vigorosa pensata per essere abbastanza non ortodossa da colleghi della Royal Academy. Questo lavoro è normalmente esposto nel salotto di Clayton, la storica casa di Henry Clay Frick, anche se l'interesse di Frick per la ritrattistica inglese risale principalmente agli anni dopo la famiglia ha lasciato Pittsburgh.
