Thomas Henry Gelston (1850-1924) è cresciuto in una famiglia ricca nel quartiere Bay Ride di Brooklyn, e ha imparato a caccia nella vicina Sheepshead Bay. Più tardi nella vita estese a Quogue dove intagliava decoys in sughero e legno. Nel 1910 vendeva decoys attraverso l'élite sporting merci retailer, Abercrombie e Fitch di New York. Nei decenni dopo la sua morte precoce nel 1924 i collezionisti hanno sempre più ammirato il suo lavoro per come ha plasmato e scolpito le teste dei suoi decoys. Esempi come questo Whimbrel (chiamato anche coprifuoco dell'Hudson) hanno contribuito a rendere Gelston uno dei più ammirati di Long Island
