Questo ritratto risale al tardo periodo dell'artista e torna alla tradizione del ritratto inglese del XVII e XVIII secolo, quando l'Inghilterra era un centro di riferimento per il genere. L'uso di uno sfondo di paesaggio era caratteristico della scuola inglese. Allo stesso tempo, il ritratto rientra anche nella tradizione romantica nell'elegante portamento della sitter e nella sua espressione, subito tosta e malinconica, mentre l'abbigliamento, la posa e i lunghi capelli non ordinati sono tutti tipici del dandy del XIX secolo.
