Thomas Wilmer Dewing, come molti artisti europei e americani nel tardo XIX e all'inizio del XX secolo, presentava spesso la figura femminile solitaria come elemento centrale nei suoi dipinti e pastelli. In questo esempio, Dewing ha usato gradazioni sottili di colore all'interno di una composizione molto austero per creare una figura che emerge quasi fantasma-come nell'immagine. La sua forma è solida solo in faccia e in testa, forse per trasmettere un'aura di intelligenza, mentre il suo corpo, compreso il suo braccio teso, si disperde in una forma volgare e vaporosa. Dewing ha spesso affinato le sue composizioni ad un minimo di rappresentazione, con conseguente una sorta di haiku pittorico di valori alti e nobili.
