Whittredge, come collega degli artisti della seconda generazione della Hudson River School John Frederick Kensett e Sanford R. Gifford, si specializzò nelle vedute delle Catskill Mountains, New England e dell'American West. I suoi lavori successivi, tuttavia, dimostrano il suo crescente interesse per i paesaggi poetici dei pittori francesi Barbizon, così come le suggestive tele di George Inness, che lavorò a Montclair, New Jersey, non lontano dalla casa Whittredge occupata in vetta dal 1880 fino alla sua morte nel 1910.
