Il dipinto è un 'Allegory della battaglia di Lepanto' . Su 7 Ottobre 1571 le flotte alleate combinate della spagna , il papato e venezia , sotto il comando supremo di don giovanni d'austria , incontrò e sconfisse la flotta ottomana nelle acque greche a lepanto ( ora nafpaktos ) nel golfo di corinto . fu un trionfo straordinario per le armi cristiane con un enorme impatto psicologico che portò sollievo alla cristianità che da tempo si era sentita assediata dall'islam . mentre la notizia si diffondeva in tutta europa , a toledo fu celebrato un te deum nella grande cattedrale , filippo ii ha dotato una processione annuale per commemorare la vittoria in perpetuo .
