"Come tante altre opere di Tiziano, è probabile che questo ritratto sia un ritratto idealizzato della bellezza femminile, e non una rappresentazione precisa di una persona. Questo è corroborato dal Duca di Urbino, che, in una lettera che scrisse il 2 maggio 1536, semplicemente lo descrisse come "lady in the blue dress". Il dipinto ottiene il suo fascino opulento e sensuale soprattutto dalla sua sapiente combinazione di valori di colore, dal vestito blu con maniche rosse, fino ai toni della carne e ai capelli dorati, abilmente placcati."
