Tiziano non ha mai visto Francesco Io, il re di Francia (1494-1547). Tuttavia riuscì a dipingere un ritratto impressionante di un righello. Il modello per il suo ritratto era una medaglia fatta da Benvenuto Cellini, mostrando il re nel profilo. La postura eretta, il torso ampio e i capi magnifici danno al ritratto un'aria regale. Il cappello piatto con le sue delicate piume, insieme ai suoi capelli fini, che viene spazzolato attraverso il viso in modo simile piume, danno una certa leggerezza al ritratto reale altrimenti molto orgoglioso.
