Ishmael era il primo figlio di Abramo e sua madre era Hagar, la serva egiziana di Sarah. Quando il figlio di Sarah, Isacco è nato Ismaele ha beccato suo fratello minore in modo che Sarah ha chiesto ad Abramo di bandirlo, insieme a sua madre. Abramo fornì loro pane e una bottiglia d'acqua e li mandò nel deserto di Beersheba. Quando l'acqua è stata spesa Hagar ha messo Ishmael sotto un cespuglio per morire e poi sedersi in qualche modo, piangendo. Ma un angelo apparve e rivelò un pozzo d'acqua nelle vicinanze, così furono entrambi salvati. La scena dell'apparizione dell'angelo era comune nella pittura italiana e olandese del XVII secolo.
