Tutti i principali membri della Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, che commissionò il dipinto, furono ritratti da Tiziano tra gli spettatori. Le scuole erano sindacati di cittadini veneziani il cui scopo originale era quello di assicurarsi che i suoi membri avevano cerimonie funebri appropriate. Nel corso degli anni, i sei più ricchi, di cui la Scuola della Carit? come uno, divenne importanti istituzioni caritative che hanno anche svolto un ruolo politico di primo piano nella vita della città.
