"Lo straordinario Trasparente posto dietro l'altare maggiore del 'capilla sindaco' nella Cattedrale di Toledo ha avuto origine nel desiderio del Vescovo Diego de Astorga y Céspedes di segnare la presenza del Santissimo Sacramento con un glorioso monumento. A causa della sua natura fantastica, della complessità delle forme, della mescolanza di stucco, pittura, bronzo e tutte le varietà di marmi colorati, la qualità di questa decorazione non può essere afferrata da una fotografia. È una sorta di frenesia di immagini e simboli proiettati nello spazio; di forme fluide e vaporose che ricordano l'Art Nouveau ma più appassionate ed esplosive. Questo monumento costò 200.000 ducati e provocò un prodigioso entusiasmo, espresso in una poesia in cui fu acclamata "l'ottava meraviglia del mondo".
