Però , recentemente è stato ipotizzato che questa costruzione sia stata eretta nel v secolo per commemorare l'inaspettata vittoria di flavio stilicone sul vandalo , Radagaiso , che fu fermato in ad 406 alle porte di florentia . L'ottagono con il suo pyramidal-shaped il tetto sarebbe quindi una costruzione tardo romana . La preziosità del two-coloured materiali di rivestimento , in divisioni geometriche , rivelando il desiderio di differenziazione dalla solita muratura in pietra o mattoni , è la caratteristica distintiva delle facciate del battistero . a firenze , il battistero è l'edificio più rappresentativo in termini di forma essenziale e qualità della sua struttura , che incarna le caratteristiche immutabili di quella che sarebbe stata la migliore architettura fiorentina successiva .
