"Il crocifisso di bronzo fatto a metà dell'XI secolo per Herimann, Arcivescovo di Colonia, ha sul suo fronte l'effigie di Cristo. Affermarsi a questa effigia è una testa fatta di una pietra intensamente blu. In un esame più approfondito la testa, con le sue caratteristiche idealizzate e la modellazione morbida, proviene ovviamente da una cultura molto diversa da quella che ha prodotto il torso. La testa è, infatti, romana ed è stata fatta nel I secolo d.C.; è stata identificata come un ritratto dell'imperatrice Livia, ed è stata presumibilmente incorporata nel crocifisso su richiesta di Herimann, che è raffigurato sul suo lato inverso".
