Tony Robert-Fleury raffigura il momento in cui l'esercito romano è entrato nella città saccheggiata.Le donne di Corinto, temono del destino che li attendeva, si nascondono ai piedi della statua di Atena.Il lavoro del giovane artista, che ha trascorso tre anni a creare un dipinto con una superficie di 24 m2, è stato assegnato una medaglia d'onore al Salone.I critici, tuttavia, hanno reagito al quadro piuttosto duramente: "Guardiamo, ammiriamo, ma non ammiriamo" (K. Lemonnier).Il dipinto fu dipinto nel 1879. La pittura originale è realizzata con olio su tela e ha dimensioni: altezza - 401 cm, larghezza - 602 cm. È ora nel Museo Orsay.
