Il maestro indiscusso dei ritratti dell'attore di primo piano è stato l'artista Toshusai Sharaku, la cui breve carriera ha abbracciato un periodo di dieci mesi nel 1794 e 1795. Nonostante la sua popolarità, la vera identità di Sharaku è ancora sconosciuta. Questa stampa è una delle tante di Sharaku con momenti da un gioco di Kabuki in cui due sorelle esatto vendetta sul cattivo che ha ucciso il loro padre, un samurai senza padrone. Qui l'artista mostra l'attore Onoe Matsusuke I nel ruolo del padre, un uomo impoverito dalla malattia. L'acconciatura inkempt, gli occhi ombreggiati, e l'ansia, posa hunched-over trasmettono il suo stato ridotto. Stampato con mica lussuosa e lucida, lo sfondo scuro della stampa è una caratteristica di molti dei migliori ritratti di Sharaku.
