Nel 1635, Peter Stuyvesant, un nativo della Friesland occidentale, nei Paesi Bassi, fu impiegato dalla Olandese West India Co. e mandato in Brasile. Nel 1643 fu nominato governatore di Curaçao e di altre isole olandesi delle Indie Occidentali; durante una spedizione contro i portoghesi su San Martino nel 1644 la sua gamba destra fu ferita, richiedendo amputazione. Nel 1646 fu nominato direttore generale del New Netherland; prestò servizio in quell'ufficio fino a quando la colonia venne sotto il dominio britannico nel 1664.
