Il cartello del negozio di tè dice “Il nostro famoso Tororo-jiru,” e Maruko era famoso per il suo toro-jiru, o la zuppa di yam grattugiata. Il poeta Basho compose anche un haiku su questo posto: ume wakana / maruko no shuku no / toro-jiru (giovane di prugne / la stazione a Maruko / zuppa di yam grattugiata). Due uomini sono raffigurati mangiando toro-jiru, si pensa che siano Yajirobei e Kitahachi dal racconto di viaggio comico Tokaidochu Hizakurige di Jippensha Ikku (tradotto in inglese come The Shank’s Mare).
