San Marco è mostrato con il suo emblema, un leone, come se interrotto nel suo dim studio dallo spettatore, al quale fa un gesto beseeching. Anche questo modello riappare in altri dipinti dell'artista (incluso Last Supper, in questa galleria). Assieme a san Matteo, qui in vista, e due immagini di compagni degli altri evangelisti, questo dipinto – pulito per la mostra – è stato scelto da Luigi XIV per decorare la sua camera a Versailles, che fa ancora; è stato prestato eccezionalmente.
