Il precursore biblico di Gesù sembra indirizzare il suo messaggio – "Ecco l'agnello di Dio" – allo spettatore mentre indica l'agnello, emblema di Cristo. La figura è quasi certamente un autoritratto (si incontreranno le sue caratteristiche moustached come Samson nell'ultima galleria) ed è stato chiaramente dipinto da uno specchio, da cui l'intensità dello sguardo scrutante. La ragione principale per la datazione di questo lavoro è il naturalismo impreziosito, come le pieghe del drappeggio, che Valentin presto ha imparato a modificare nell'interesse di una maggiore coerenza stilistica e sofisticazione.
