Avendo dimostrato a Dio la sua volontà di sacrificare il proprio figlio, Abramo è miracolosamente fermato dall'intervento di un angelo, che indica un montone sostitutivo. Danneggiata e incompiuta, l'immagine ci permette di vedere con l'ausilio dell'immagine a infrarossi (mostrata nelle vicinanze) le alternative che Valentin considerava come ha posato e reposto i modelli nel suo studio. L'immagine finale è quindi il culmine di riposizionare figure reali piuttosto che raffinare il disegno nei disegni. E il risultato è un'interpretazione incentrato sull'uomo.
