Mentre cerca, inconsapevolmente, di scaldare le mani, l'apostolo Pietro è riconosciuto come discepolo di Cristo. La società assortita di soldati prendono nota — in gradi variabili. Il destino di Pietro è cambiato come se con il lancio di dadi, raffigurato a metà aria! Il rilievo scolpito si basa sulle placche in terracotta romana, di cui i cast sono stati raccolti e utilizzati come oggetti d’arte. Questa immagine, chiaramente ispirata alla negazione di San Pietro di Ribera (nella prima galleria), apparteneva a Giovanni Battista Mellini (1591-1627), avvocato e decano dell’università di Roma e collezionista di antichità.
