Mosè tiene una canna e le compresse con i Dieci Comandamenti. (L'ebraico è stato copiato imperfettamente: il testo è stato fornito da Angelo Giori, un mecenate imparato di Valentin il cui ritratto è in un'altra galleria?) Questo non è il feroce, vigoroso profeta scolpito da Michelangelo, ma una figura invecchiata, sembriamo riconoscere il modello – assorbito nel pensiero. L'immagine era destinata ad appellarsi agli interessi antiquari, perché Mosè è classicamente guarnito e sopra il suo toga blu indossa un mantello romano, o paludamentum, decorato con un modello di meandri greco. Nel 1637, l'immagine fu venduta a Venezia dal pittore Nicolas Régnier, pittori anch'essi spacciatori, a Giacomo, terzo marchese Hamilton; poi entrò nelle collezioni asburgiche di Vienna.
