Il più grande seguace francese di Caravaggio, Valentin fu uno dei più importanti artisti stranieri che lavoravano nella Roma del XVII secolo. Ha spesso raffigurato scene di musica-making, bere, e di fortuna-telling nel modo caratteristico diretto, vivido visto qui. Questa immagine di un giovane soldato che canta un madrigale d'amore è unica nella carriera di Valentin ed è forse emblematica del sobriquet che ha preso a Roma: Amador, una parola spagnola per "il ragazzo di sempre". Nel 1650, questo dipinto era nella raccolta del cardinale Mazarin, potente ministro di Luigi XIV.
