Il ritratto di Mademoiselle Claus è stata una prima versione del lavoro più famoso di Manet Il balcone dove Mademoiselle Claus è raffigurato con Berthe Morisot e Antoine Guillemet. La versione incompiuta e precedente fu dipinta nel 1868. Poco dopo la morte di Manet, fu acquistato da John Singer Sargent nel 1884. È stata mostrata solo una volta negli ultimi 100 anni alla National Gallery durante una retrospettiva delle opere dell’artista al centesimo anniversario della sua morte.
