L'espressione del calcolo, quasi crudele, della valutazione, amplificata dal suo pugno chiuso, dà a quest'uomo un'aria aggressiva, ma non conosciamo la sua identità. L'iscrizione sul parapetto non aiuta. Queste lettere, VVO, sono state interpretate come una forma del latino vivo (in vita). Ciò suggerisce che il ritratto è stato dipinto dalla vita e che conferisce sia al soggetto che al pittore una misura di immortalità. Può essere più probabile, tuttavia, essere un'abbreviazione di un motto umanista, forse virtus vincit omnia (virtue conquista tutti).
