Alla fine del 1889, Van Gogh dipinse tre versioni di questa immagine. Ha descritto il primo come uno studio della natura "più colorato con toni più solenni" (collezione privata) e il secondo come una versione in studio in una "molto discreta gamma" di colori (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.). L'opera attuale, la più risolta e stilizzata dei tre, era destinata a sua sorella e a sua madre, a cui Van Gogh scrisse: "Spero che il dipinto delle donne negli ulivi sia un po' a tuo agio—ho mandato [a] disegno a Gauguin, . . . . . e ha pensato bene. .
