Nidi Un dipinto che ingrandisce sulla bassa vegetazione sotto gli alberi, il pavimento della foresta o l'edera è chiamato un sous-bois (‘undergrowth’). Van Gogh dipinge motivi sous-bois durante tutta la sua carriera. Egli li chiama anche ‘sedi eterni di verde per gli amanti’. Van Gogh crea questo lavoro nel lussureggiante, giardino sovrastato del manicomio. Lo dipinge utilizzando varie tonalità di giallo (orlo), verde, marrone e blu, e applica la vernice in un impasto denso, bagnato su bagnato con un tocco fluido e vivace. I brevi pennellate formano un pattern ritmico che raffigura esattamente la fitta vegetazione. AttenzioneMentre la pittura all'aperto, l'artista a volte attira l'attenzione di altri residenti nel manicomio: “Tutti vengono a vedere quando lavoro in giardino, e posso assicurarvi che siete più discreti e più gentili a lasciarmi in pace che, per esempio, i buoni cittadini di Arles”.
