Il monumento domina la sala ottagonale al centro della villa, tutto intorno a questa colossale opera sorge il Pantheon del Risorgimento, un'assemblea di illustri personaggi storici che vissero per la maggior parte durante gli anni dell'Unità d'Italia. Il duca di Brunswick morì in esilio a Ginevra, lasciando alla città un'enourmous bequest a condizione che un mausoleo fosse eretto in suo onore. Vela è stato invitato a dirigere il progetto. Lavorando insieme all'architetto Antonio Croci (1823-84) di Mendrisio, realizzò un modello architettonico che non corrispondeva al comitato
