Rinomato per i suoi penetranti, a volte anche i ritratti di artisti del circo, Kuhn resistette alla maggior parte degli aspetti dell'avanguardia europea durante la sua carriera. Di conseguenza, i critici dell'arte spesso annunciarono il suo lavoro come particolarmente "americano". La babysitter per questo ritratto è Albert Driscoll, che ha modellato per altre opere di Kuhn. Sconvolto dal make-up e dal costume, l'identità "vera" di Driscoll è nascosta dallo spettatore, mentre la sua presenza inerte seduta contrasta con la fisicità associata al clown.
