Si ritiene che Matisse abbia usato sua moglie come modello per questo dipinto, che ha raccolto critiche molto negative quando è stato esposto al Salon D’Automne, nel 1905. Era questa mostra che il termine “fauve”, che si traduce in “wild” o “beastly”, è stato coniato, dal critico d’arte Louis Vauxcelles, che ha riferito ai dipinti come bestia, un commento che è stato stampato in un giornale pubblico e liberamente gettato intorno in pubblico. Il dipinto è stato acquistato, tuttavia, da Gertrude e Leo Stein, fornendo un po 'di buone notizie a Matisse, che era stato demoralizzato alle ricevimenti negativi le sue opere avevano guarnito.
