"Il tradimento delle immagini mostra il tentativo di Magritte di mettere in discussione la loro realtà. Il dipinto ritrae un grande singolo tubo, e nella parte inferiore del dipinto, in francese, afferma “Questo non è un tubo.” Il punto di Magritte è semplice: il dipinto non è un tubo; è un'immagine di un tubo. Una storia aneddotica è che quando Magritte è stato chiesto se il dipinto era un tubo, ha risposto che naturalmente non è un tubo, e ha suggerito che cercano di riempirlo con il tabacco. Ha usato la stessa tecnica in un dipinto di una mela, raffigurante una grande mela verde, con la linea “Questa non è una mela”. "
