Una delle battaglie più lunghe e costose della storia umana, la battaglia di Verdun iniziò il 21 febbraio 1916 e durò oltre 303 giorni con oltre 975.000 vittime su entrambi i lati. Anche se i francesi sono stati in definitiva in grado di sostenere l'avanzata tedesca, il costo della vita umana e del materiale a entrambi i lati era sconcertante. Il comandante in difesa Marshall Philippe Petain, “Il leone di Verdun”, che ha esclamato famosamente “ils ne passeront pas!” (“non passeranno”) (vedere n. 125–7, 129), è stato visto come un eroe nazionale dai francesi. Il suo ruolo di capo di stato per il governo di Vichy durante la seconda guerra mondiale portò alla sua condanna di tradimento e condanna a morte, poi commutata alla vita in prigione.
