Con il blu cobalto importato dalla Persia, la porcellana nel celebre stile blu e bianco fu prodotta per la prima volta in Cina nel XIV secolo durante la dinastia Yuan (1271-1368) e rimase alla moda per secoli. Nel centro di questa ciotola, un uomo nel profilo siede a terra. In fondo si trovano una rupe, un pino e una luna nel cielo. L'esterno della ciotola raffigura gli studiosi riuniti vicino a un padiglione in un giardino, alcuni libri di lettura, alcuni ammirando una pergamena di calligrafia, e due giocando Wei-ch'i (o Go, come è noto in Giappone e in Occidente), un gioco da tavolo antico.
