Il sitter ha una somiglianza con Hendrickje Stoffels (nato circa 1625–26, morto 1663), la moglie cognata di Rembrandt e il soggetto di un certo numero dei suoi ritratti, uno dei quali è nel Met. L'immagine è opera di un allievo di Rembrandt, e la forte luce che colpisce il volto suggerisce che può essere di Barent Fabritius. Un'altra versione è a Dresda.
