Anche se una volta un noto Rembrandt, c'è ora un forte consenso che questa tela è stata dipinta circa 1654–55 dal suo allievo, Willem Drost (1633–1659). Il tipo femminile, il disegno delle caratteristiche facciali, e l'esecuzione pittorica del costume sono caratteristiche di Drost. Il soggetto (che è raro nell'Europa del Nord) e la composizione sembrano ispirarsi ad un recente esempio italiano come il Sibilo Cumaio di Domenichino del 1616-17 nella Galleria Borghese di Roma. Drost lavorò in Italia dal 1655 fino alla sua morte precoce.
