Durante la breve vita di William A. Harper, concentrò le sue ricerche artistiche sulle rappresentazioni del paesaggio intorno a lui, dalla Francia, dove studiò e visse per parte della sua vita, in Messico, dove morì. Ritraeva scene che spaziano da campi, colline e paesaggi marini a strutture costruite come terrazze, patio e scale. In Staircase, Harper utilizza toni freddi così come impasto spazzola e inciampamento per delineare gradini eleganti, pareti di invecchiamento e viti tortuose. In primo piano di questa scena tranquilla e non popolata, un maiverde spessamente dipinto ancora il fondo dei gradini che conduce l'occhio a due piccoli busti su piedistalli nascosti sotto una tenda protettiva.
